Led by Dr. Bharati Abhyankar (37+ years), who specialises in colposcopy and cervical cancer screening, with Dr. Tanvi Hirekerur-Abhyankar — early detection that protects women's health.
Cervical cancer is one of the few cancers that can often be prevented, because it develops slowly through changes that can be found and treated early. Colposcopy is the key step: a close, magnified look at the cervix (the mouth of the womb) that shows changes the eye cannot see. If you have had an abnormal Pap smear or a positive HPV test, colposcopy tells us exactly what is happening and what, if anything, needs treatment.
Women who are or have been sexually active should have regular cervical screening — ask us about the right schedule for you. Bleeding is not always cancer; our guide on heavy or irregular periods explains the many possible causes and why a Pap smear and colposcopy are part of the work-up.
We explain each step before we begin so you know what to expect. The examination is similar to a routine Pap smear and is usually short; if a tissue sample is needed it is sent to the pathologist and we go through the report with you. Most findings are mild and can be watched or treated simply — and when treatment is needed, finding it early makes it far easier. Dr. Bharati Abhyankar's long experience in colposcopy means your results are read with care.
Most women feel only mild discomfort, similar to a Pap smear. If a small tissue sample is taken you may feel a brief pinch or cramp. We explain every step and you can ask us to pause at any time.
Usually not. An abnormal Pap smear means some cells on the cervix look different and need a closer look. Most such changes are mild or pre-cancerous and can be monitored or treated successfully, which is exactly why colposcopy is done.
It depends on your age, your earlier results and whether you have had an HPV test. Our gynaecologists will recommend a screening schedule that suits you; many women need a check only every few years when results are normal.
Cover depends on your policy, but Purva Hospital offers hassle-free cashless claims with providers including New India Assurance, National Insurance Company, Oriental Insurance, United Insurance and Aditya Birla — our billing team assists throughout.
